Reference:

My 78 year-old mother and I took a photo safari with Uhuru Safaris in June 2004. Looking back, we still can't believe how much we did in just six days.

Our guides (and now good friends) Johan and Irene provided so much information about South Africa's history, culture, and of course, all the animals. My mom and I were curious about everything, and Johan and Irene were always able to answer all our questions.

Since we've returned home, we spoken with so many people who took photo safaris in South Africa. They didn't see half the animals or learn half as much about the country as we did.

We would highly recommend taking any of the photo safari packages with Uhuru Safaris. In fact, I'm returning in August 2006 with friends and relatives for new experiences with Johan and Irene.

If you'd like to hear more about my experiences with Uhuru Safaris, you can contact me in Lancaster, NY, at

GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARK

Golden Gate, in the upper valley of the Little Caledon River, is renowned for its stunning scenery.  It covers an area of 11,6oo ha.  Wind and water have wrought and twisted the sandstone into magnificent cliffs which glow blood red and golden at sunset after rain – a never-to-be-forgotten sight.

Eland, springbok, grey Reebok, black wildebeest, baboon and many birds – lammergeyers, black eagles, jackal buzzards and rock pigeons – live here.

Traveling east, we will go to  Intibane Game Ranch where we will be accommodated.  We will visit:

HLUHLUWE GAME RESERVE

Set in the heart of Zululand, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings, such as Dingiswayo and Chaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws, where today the “Big 5” of African legend stalks the verdant savannah.  The park covers 96,000 ha and homes the largest population of black and white rhino.

ZULU CULTURAL VILLAGE

A reconstructed traditional beehive Zulu village that commemorates the Zulu tradition.  Here we are entertained on Zulu dances and we also visit their ever so popular curio shop.

Traveling north through Kwa-Zulu Natal, we cross the border into Swaziland.

HLANE GAME RESERVE – (Meaning:  WILDERNESS)

Swaziland is one of only two Kingdoms in Southern Africa (Lesotho being the other) and is Africa’s last truly traditional Kingdom.  Here we visit the Hlane Game Reserve.  The Sibhaca dancers will entertain us while relaxing around the campfire.

Still traveling north we enter the Kruger National Park.

KRUGER  NATIONAL  PARK

The world renowned Kruger National Park was proclaimed the first, and now, the largest conservation area in Africa – over 20,000 square kilometer.  Home to large herds of impala, blue wildebeest, eland, gemsbok and buffalo (among others).

Sable is found allover the park, although they are very scarce.  The park also offers protection to predators such as lion, leopard, brown and spotted hyena, wild dog, cheetah and black-backed jackal.

It homes 147 mammal species, 507 bird-, 114 reptile-, 34 amphibian-, 49 fish- and 336 tree-.

Traveling north-west, we go to Tshipise:

Tshipise, a Venda word meaning “hot spring”, is well-known for its sulphurous mineral springs.  A day of leisure, relaxing around the pool or in one of the mineral baths.

Traveling south, we go to Pilansberg:

PILANESBERG

This is the fourth-largest national park in Southern Africa.  Created within the volcanic compels of Pilansberg and next to Sun City, the 58,000ha provides sanctuary for many of the animals which once roamed freely here and has in excess of 7000 animals, including 24 of the larger animal species, the “Big 5” and more than 350 bird species.  The park boast healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo.  A wide variety of rare and common species exist with endemic species like the nocturnal brown hyena, fleet-footed cheetah, the majestic sable, only to mention a few

SUN CITY (Only on the 21 day safari)
